Personalization drives direct mail performance. According to Lob's State of Direct Mail Consumer Insights 2026 report, 89% of consumers say relevant mail is what influences them to take action.
But relevance looks different depending on who's holding the piece. The offer, the message, and even the format that resonates with a Gen Z consumer could miss with a Boomer, and vice versa.
Gen Z: identity, life stage, and brand credibility
Gen Z responds strongly to personalization that reflects who they are and where they are in life. The report found that Gen Z is more than twice as likely as Boomers to respond to life-stage personalization.
They also care about brand credibility in a way older generations don't as strongly. 55% of Gen Z say receiving direct mail from a brand makes it feel more credible, and 59% say it feels special. For a generation that grew up in a digital-first world, a physical piece signals that a brand made a deliberate effort to reach them.
QR codes work well with this audience too. And 44% of Gen Z enrolled in Informed Delivery click promotion links often, the highest of any generation.
Millennials: relevance, timing, and digital integration
Millennials are more likely to convert from direct mail than any other generation. 75% have made a purchase, signed up for a service, or become a customer as a result of receiving a piece.
What moves them is relevance tied to something they're actively considering, combined with an easy path to act digitally. 52% of Millennials say direct mail feels more trustworthy than digital communication, the highest of any generation.
They also share mail at high rates, which means a well-targeted piece can travel beyond the original recipient.
Boomers: offers, discounts, and familiarity
Unlike younger generations, boomers are driven almost entirely by offers and discounts. 62% say including an offer or discount influenced them to take action.
They're also the most likely to prefer a letter in an envelope format, and the least likely to engage with QR codes or digital response paths.
For Boomers, personalization means relevance to a current need and a clear, credible offer. Life stage messaging and name-level personalization matter less than practical value.
How to put it into action
No matter the generation, personalized mail converts. Technical bottlenecks shouldn’t stop you from sending it. Look for no-code tools, like Lob’s No-Code Design Suite, that help you and your team build dynamic templates, swap offers and imagery by segment, and get campaigns into production without relying on developers.
