State of Direct Mail

State of Direct Mail 2026   |   Financial Services

During a tighter economy, financial services mail stands out.

Consumers are approaching financial decisions more thoughtfully this year. Whether they're comparing credit card offers, opening a new account, or planning for the future, they're looking for information that helps them make confident choices.

That shift is changing how they engage with direct mail. Sixty-eight percent of consumers say economic conditions have changed what they pay attention to in their mailbox, and three in four now read or save financial services mail instead of throwing it away, a significant increase from last year. They're not looking for more promotions. They're responding to communications that arrive at the right moment, address a real need, and provide real value.

In the 2026 State of Direct Mail Consumer Insights report, we explore what consumers expect from direct mail and how financial services marketers can deliver it.

Study Methodology

Lob conducted this study in partnership with Kirin Analytics and PureSpectrum. The online survey was completed in July 2026 with 2,000 adult consumers across the United States, nationally representative of age, gender, income, and region.

Financial mail performs best when it helps people make decisions

Consumers aren't simply looking for another credit card offer. Whether someone is comparing banking options, researching a loan, or planning for the future, relevant information is what consistently drives engagement. 81% of consumers say at least one relevance-related factor would make them more likely to read financial mail.

What do you typically do with direct mail you receive from financial services brands?

Consumers want financial mail that delivers value

The most requested types of financial mail all have one thing in common: they give consumers something useful. Loyalty rewards top the list, followed by exclusive rates, educational content, and personalized recommendations that help consumers get more from their existing financial relationships.

What do you wish you would receive from financial services brands via direct mail?

The envelope remains the format consumers open first

When it comes to financial services mail, consumers overwhelmingly favor formats that feel familiar and easy to review. Letters in envelopes remain the clear favorite, with 43% saying the format they're most likely to read, more than twice the preference for postcards. While marketers often look for new ways to stand out, this data suggests that for financial services, a straightforward format continues to earn the most attention.

Which of the following formats of direct mail are you most likely to read
if it is sent from a financial services brand?

Three ways financial marketers
can act on this data

1

Build campaigns around financial moments.

Reach customers when they're opening an account, comparing products, renewing a loan, or planning for a major life event. Timing is one of the strongest drivers of engagement.

2

Make every piece feel personally useful.

Financial decisions require trust. Relevant, well-timed mail helps reinforce credibility, especially among consumers navigating economic uncertainty.

3

Lead with practical value.

Consumers are looking for communications that help them make better financial decisions — not just another promotion. Educational content, exclusive offers, and personalized recommendations go further than generic acquisition mail.
