https://www.docupost.comDocuPost helps small and mid-size businesses send transactional and operational mail without writing code or managing print logistics. Its customers, including attorneys, accountants, and other paper-intensive businesses, depend on the platform to send billing statements, required filings, and other critical communications.
Early on, the team faced a decision: should they build their own print operation or focus on building the best product possible? They tried doing both.
"We initially spent a fortune procuring print and mail equipment – folder inserters, commercial printers, all the things – and did an in-house trial of handling fulfillment," DocuPost CEO David Nelson said.
The experiment quickly exposed an important reality. Building and maintaining a print operation required an entirely different set of expertise than building great software.
"We pretty quickly saw that we did not want to participate in that aspect of the business,” said Nelson. “It was much too complicated, and the potential margins we'd recover were negligible."
Instead, DocuPost made a deliberate decision to invest in its product, and find a partner that could handle the complexity of print and mail at scale.
By integrating Lob into its platform, DocuPost gives customers a seamless way to create and send enterprise-grade mail while Lob manages the print and mail infrastructure behind the scenes.
Lob powers the platform through:
- Developer-first APIs that make it easy to embed direct mail into the DocuPost platform. "The API is clearly documented and it just works,” says Nelson.
- Delivery visibility through USPS tracking APIs, without spending developer resources integrating directly with USPS.
- A nationwide Print Delivery Network that allows flexible scale for Docupost’s varied customer base. "We have customers who send two letters a day and customers who send 50,000 letters on a given day,” says Nelson. “Lob's network automatically absorbs volume fluctuations while optimizing for speed and cost."
- Continuous platform innovation that expands what DocuPost can offer customers over time. "Every feature from Lob's roadmap represents a potential new feature or enhancement that we can bring to our customers," says Nelson.
With Lob, DocuPost delivers more value to its customers. More mail formats, regional printers, and scalable infrastructure help customers deliver fast, effective mail campaigns."
The number of form factors and print options provided by Lob makes DocuPost an attractive player in the market,” said Nelson. “We've introduced countless more options than we would ever be able to handle on our own."
Instead of investing in print infrastructure or fulfillment operations, DocuPost continues investing in the product experience and customer value. "
